At Kym Rodger Design, we aim to provide a seamless experience, not just a flawless end result. From the first moment, we engage our clients to full understand and immerse ourselves in their preferences, requirements, and overall lifestyle goals, which includes a room by room review of how they ideally plan to use their space. From there, we develop a unique and detailed design for each specific area. When it comes to client collaboration, a favorite space of ours to design is the dining room! This area is a special place for family and friends to celebrate, gather, and enjoy the hearth of the home together. If you are anything like us, your dining table may also be utilized as a work desk, kids crafting zone, or even a catchall table. The list of functions is endless in our modern work environment, which is why creating an inviting and comfortable dining room zone is a must.

At KRD, we believe that if you follow basic design principles, you can create your own gorgeous dining room!

Zoning

A great way to highlight your dining room, especially in homes that enjoy open-plan living, is to use an area rug or floor finish to visually demarcate different zones. We have selected some of our favorite Coco rugs, which we simply love! Here at Kym Rodger design we typically opt for warm textured rugs, especially those made of natural fibers which are beautiful and safe for children and pets within the home.

Scale

KRD understands that every space is unique, and varies in size depending on your or your families needs. Some of our clients require large dining rooms to host extended family gatherings, while others opt for cozy, intimate nooks for quiet relaxation. No matter the scale, selecting furniture, lighting, and decorative elements such as tasteful and complimentary art pieces are essential. As you can see from our previous projects, each space features a unique dining table which fits the dimensions of the room perfectly, allowing a comfortable amount of space for seating, bar carts, and other unique and fun elements.

Lighting

The function and desired mood of your space will determine whether your dining room requires ‘task’ lighting, meaning your dining table functions for tasks like work calls or children’s homework assignments. If this applies to you, it is best to install dimmable recessed ‘can’ lights to ensure the space is properly illuminated. For moody dinner parties, a sculptural pendant or chandelier may provide all the light you require. At KRD, we typically opt for a combination approach incorporating both a feature light, such as a chandelier and dimmable recessed ‘can’ lights in order to cater to any and all of your needs.

Color

Color can be introduced in a variety of bold and/ or subtle ways. For example, color and texture can be introduced through hardwood flooring, rugs, furniture upholstery, drapery, statement lighting, wallpaper, flowers, indoor plants, and much more.

At KRD, we encourage you to be true to yourself, follow your own unique style, and embrace what makes you feel calm and happy within your own space.

Trends will come and go, but the memories you create in your home will last a lifetime. Kym Rodger Design offers an extended range of architectural and design services, as well as custom wallpaper. To find out more about our full suite of offerings, visit us online below!
