I would have to say that color is one of my favorite things when designing, and probably one of the best ways to bring unity to a design project.

If you are trying to incorporate new furnishings and decor with existing furnishings and decor. Color can bring the 2 together and create a look that is harmonious and cohesive. Warm tones such as crimson, gold, scarlet red & orange can be vibrant and energize a space while cool tones such as blue, indigo, turquoise & sage can bring calm to a busy space.

Color selection is a very psychological and emotion driven choice. Colors can take you back to your childhood, or remind you of a Tahitian sunset. Colors are what dreams are made of.

The goal of color selection is to have it flow seamlessly into the flooring selection, such as carpets, tile, laminate or wood. And then layer and build your room from there. It is essentially the “glue” that holds everything together.

When selecting color, we also want to take into consideration the size of the room. “Warm” colors can make a room look small, while “Cool” tones can make a room look stark. A good rule of thumb is to use the 60-30-10 Color Rule, which includes 60% of the space which are the walls, and Large anchor pieces. 30% would include; accent pieces, textiles, throw rugs etc., and 10% would include artwork and decor. Ultimately, the largest percent being 60% of your wall space.

Just remember what mood you want to evoke. And don't be afraid to sample a few colors on a wall, because, both natural and artificial lighting can change the look of a color. What looks great in daylight can take on a different tone and feel at night.

Let's not forget about the paint finish. This is very important. A painted finish or sheen can reflect the amount of light a paint surface can reflect. Paint that reflects very little light appears smooth, while paint that is flat can make a room cozier.

Different Types Of Paint Finishes

Matte

Also known as flat. This paint has a “chalky” look and feel when dry.

Satin

This paint has a soft “Pearl '' like finish Alot like the “Eggshell’ finish, it is pretty true to the color swatch.

Semi-Gloss

This paint has a shiny, sleek appearance to it which brightens the room by naturally reflecting light.

High-Gloss

It is the last, this paint reflects the most amount of light, this paint has a very shiny appearance and is used a lot in accents for furniture and doors.

Paint is one of the easiest ways to change the look and feel of a room.

Now you're an expert.

So let's have fun, be expressive and build a room that is magical.

About Design And Lifestyle By Sonya

With over 15 plus years in the Interior Design and Custom Window Covering Industry I wanted to share with my community the love I have of Interior
Design, Colorization and Custom Window Treatments. I have always known what I wanted to do, even as a young girl, I knew that I wanted to design. I would rearrange my bedroom and our family living room multiple ways, and my parents never said anything, they just let me do it. After I graduated from High School, I studied interior Design at The American College of the Applied Arts in Los Angeles, earning my B.S, of Applied Arts, and A.A of Business Administration. Soon after that, I set my sights on my career. “It” (the design bug) has always been in me, I was laser focused. Making your home a safe haven, where you can celebrate & share a gourmet meal with your friends and family in your newly decorated dining room, or create a place of  “Zen”, a quiet space to escape from the daily grind, that was my goal. My Philosophy was to “Design spaces that stood the test of time when beautiful memories can be made”. I enjoy layering with colors and textures. Taking what you have and mixing it with something new. I bring the fun to you, whether it's a small re-do to your office space, replacing your window treatments, adding drapery panels or a full design project, I can get you where you need to be. My celebrity clients, entertainment projects and commercial work have been fun and interesting projects as well... It doesn't stop. I truly enjoy what I do.
